Susan Sontag dies...

If you don't know who Susan Sontag is you should at least track down her "Notes on Camp" and "on the torture of others". Two pieces that span 40 years, and yet illustrate her social advocacy and commentary.

Her friendship with the late and fellow social adequate Edward Said had much to do with their common struggles with illness. In 2000 TALK magazine published their discussions on dealing with illness.

Sontag's death follows the passing of the great French philosopher Jacques Derrida (who passed away in October this year) who's social commentary also influenced many....

Kerry Won. Here are the Facts.

by Greg PalastI know you don't want to hear it. You can't face one more hung chad. But I don't have a choice. As a journalist examining that messy sausage called American democracy, it's my job to tell you who got the most votes in the deciding states. Tuesday, in Ohio and New Mexico, it was John Kerry. Most voters in Ohio thought they were voting for Kerry. At 1:05 a.m. Wednesday morning, CNN's exit poll showed Kerry beating Bush among Ohio women by 53 percent to 47 percent. The exit polls were later combined with—and therefore contaminated by—the tabulated results, ultimately becoming a mirror of the apparent actual vote. Kerry also defeated Bush among Ohio's male voters 51 percent to 49 percent. Unless a third gender voted in Ohio, Kerry took the state. So what's going on here? Answer: the exit polls are accurate. Pollsters ask, "Who did you vote for?" Unfortunately, they don't ask the crucial, question, "Was your vote counted?" The voters don't know. Here's why. Although the exit polls show that most voters in Ohio punched cards for Kerry-Edwards, thousands of these votes were simply not recorded. This was predictable and it was predicted. [See TomPaine.com, "An Election Spoiled Rotten," November 1.]Once again, at the heart of the Ohio uncounted vote game are, I'm sorry to report, hanging chads and pregnant chads, plus some other ballot tricks old and new.The election in Ohio was not decided by the voters but by something called "spoilage." Typically in the United States, about 3 percent of the vote is voided, just thrown away, not recorded. When the bobble-head boobs on the tube tell you Ohio or any state was won by 51 percent to 49 percent, don't you believe it ... it has never happened in the United States, because the total never reaches a neat 100 percent. The television totals simply subtract out the spoiled vote.Whose Votes Are Discarded? And not all votes spoil equally. Most of those votes, say every official report, come from African-American and minority precincts. (To learn more, click here.)We saw this in Florida in 2000. Exit polls showed Gore with a plurality of at least 50,000, but it didn't match the official count. That's because the official, Secretary of State Katherine Harris, excluded 179,855 spoiled votes. In Florida, as in Ohio, most of these votes lost were cast on punch cards where the hole wasn't punched through completely—leaving a 'hanging chad,'—or was punched extra times. Whose cards were discarded? Expert statisticians investigating spoilage for the government calculated that 54 percent of the ballots thrown in the dumpster were cast by black folks. (To read the report from the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, click here .)And here's the key: Florida is terribly typical. The majority of ballots thrown out (there will be nearly 2 million tossed out from Tuesday's election) will have been cast by African American and other minority citizens. So here we go again. Or, here we don't go again. Because unlike last time, Democrats aren't even asking Ohio to count these cards with the not-quite-punched holes (called "undervotes" in the voting biz). Nor are they demanding we look at the "overvotes" where voter intent may be discerned.Ohio is one of the last states in America to still use the vote-spoiling punch-card machines. And the Secretary of State of Ohio, J. Kenneth Blackwell, wrote before the election, “the possibility of a close election with punch cards as the state’s primary voting device invites a Florida-like calamity.”But this week, Blackwell, a rabidly partisan Republican, has warmed up to the result of sticking with machines that have a habit of eating Democratic votes. When asked if he feared being this year's Katherine Harris, Blackwell noted that Ms. Fix-it's efforts landed her a seat in Congress.Exactly how many votes were lost to spoilage this time? Blackwell's office, notably, won't say, though the law requires it be reported. Hmm. But we know that last time, the total of Ohio votes discarded reached a democracy-damaging 1.96 percent. The machines produced their typical loss—that's 110,000 votes—overwhelmingly Democratic. The Impact Of ChallengesFirst and foremost, Kerry was had by chads. But the Democrat wasn't punched out by punch cards alone. There were also the 'challenges.' That's a polite word for the Republican Party of Ohio's use of an old Ku Klux Klan technique: the attempt to block thousands of voters of color at the polls. In Ohio, Wisconsin and Florida, the GOP laid plans for poll workers to ambush citizens under arcane laws—almost never used—allowing party-designated poll watchers to finger individual voters and demand they be denied a ballot. The Ohio courts were horrified and federal law prohibits targeting of voters where race is a factor in the challenge. But our Supreme Court was prepared to let Republicans stand in the voting booth door.In the end, the challenges were not overwhelming, but they were there. Many apparently resulted in voters getting these funky "provisional" ballots—a kind of voting placebo—which may or may not be counted. Blackwell estimates there were 175,000; Democrats say 250,000. Pick your number. But as challenges were aimed at minorities, no one doubts these are, again, overwhelmingly Democratic. Count them up, add in the spoiled punch cards (easy to tally with the human eye in a recount), and the totals begin to match the exit polls; and, golly, you've got yourself a new president. Remember, Bush won by 136,483 votes in Ohio.Enchanted State's Enchanted VoteNow, on to New Mexico, where a Kerry plurality—if all votes are counted—is more obvious still. Before the election, in TomPaine.com, I wrote, "John Kerry is down by several thousand votes in New Mexico, though not one ballot has yet been counted."How did that happen? It's the spoilage, stupid; and the provisional ballots.CNN said George Bush took New Mexico by 11,620 votes. Again, the network total added up to that miraculous, and non-existent, '100 percent' of ballots cast.New Mexico reported in the last race a spoilage rate of 2.68 percent, votes lost almost entirely in Hispanic, Native American and poor precincts—Democratic turf. From Tuesday's vote, assuming the same ballot-loss rate, we can expect to see 18,000 ballots in the spoilage bin.Spoilage has a very Democratic look in New Mexico. Hispanic voters in the Enchanted State, who voted more than two to one for Kerry, are five times as likely to have their vote spoil as a white voter. Counting these uncounted votes would easily overtake the Bush 'plurality.'Already, the election-bending effects of spoilage are popping up in the election stats, exactly where we'd expect them: in heavily Hispanic areas controlled by Republican elections officials. Chaves County, in the "Little Texas" area of New Mexico, has a 44 percent Hispanic population, plus African Americans and Native Americans, yet George Bush "won" there 68 percent to 31 percent.I spoke with Chaves' Republican county clerk before the election, and he told me that this huge spoilage rate among Hispanics simply indicated that such people simply can't make up their minds on the choice of candidate for president. Oddly, these brown people drive across the desert to register their indecision in a voting booth. Now, let's add in the effect on the New Mexico tally of provisional ballots."They were handing them out like candy," Albuquerque journalist Renee Blake reported of provisional ballots. About 20,000 were given out. Who got them?Santiago Juarez who ran the "Faithful Citizenship" program for the Catholic Archdiocese in New Mexico, told me that "his" voters, poor Hispanics, whom he identified as solid Kerry supporters, were handed the iffy provisional ballots. Hispanics were given provbisional ballots, rather than the countable kind "almost religiously," he said, at polling stations when there was the least question about a voter's identification. Some voters, Santiago said, were simply turned away.Your Kerry Victory PartySo we can call Ohio and New Mexico for John Kerry—if we count all the votes. But that won't happen. Despite the Democratic Party's pledge, the leadership this time gave in to racial disenfranchisement once again. Why? No doubt, the Democrats know darn well that counting all the spoiled and provisional ballots will require the cooperation of Ohio's Secretary of State, Blackwell. He will ultimately decide which spoiled and provisional ballots get tallied. Blackwell, hankering to step into Kate Harris' political pumps, is unlikely to permit anything close to a full count. Also, Democratic leadership knows darn well the media would punish the party for demanding a full count. What now? Kerry won, so hold your victory party. But make sure the shades are down: it may be become illegal to demand a full vote count under PATRIOT Act III.I used to write a column for the Guardian papers in London. Several friends have asked me if I will again leave the country. In light of the failure—a second time—to count all the votes, that won't be necessary. My country has left me.

God Help us all

Of course being an atheistic type person I think George W. Bush winning a second term is proof that there is no God. The worse part about this whole thing is that the on Tuesday the US truly showed its Neo-Nazist leanings by ensuring a one party system. There are no checks and balances to ensure that the Neo-conservatives of the Bush administration don't overreach there bounds. The next invasion is coming I'm sure.

There are many ironies about the way GWB won this election. Apparently they were scared out of making a change for the positive. Cheney's threats about 'making the wrong decision' obviously rang true with the American public. The specter of September 11th, the fear of it happening to them, made them think that GWB would keep them safe. Of course September 11th happened on his watch, and in New York. New Yorkers saw this. They voted overwhelmingly for Kerry! Steven Colbert, form the Daily Show, made a great comment about how ironic that was (I'll see if I can find the quote for you). In the meantime no one seemed to care that Osama Bin Laden is still out there, on Friday there was another video, what happened to smoking him out of his hole? Talk about terrorists as a nuisance. If I was an American the simple fact that Bin Laden is even around to make threats suggest that the Bush administration wasn't doing its job. Personally I think most Americans were duped, in part by the corporate dominated media and by the administration. Maybe they wake up soon...

I'm scared an worried, for my American friends, and the rest of us... I'm waiting for the doomsday clock to move closer to midnight... The uncertainty and the prospects of another 4 years of a president that believes in the Rapture and believes he is spreading 'freedom' through violence makes me wonder if we're going to get of of this alive.

The only thing I feel I can do is reach for a song top sum up my fears...

Johnny's in America
Low techs at the wheel
Nobody needs anyone
They don't even just pretend
Johnny's in America

I'm afraid of Americans
I'm afraid of the world
I'm afraid I can't help it
I'm afraid I can't
I'm afraid of Americans

Johnny's in America
Johnny wants a brain
Johnny wants to suck on a Coke
Johnny wants a woman
Johnny wants to think of a joke
Johnny's in America

I'm afraid of Americans
Johnny's in America
Johnny looks up at the stars
Johnny combs his hair
And Johnny wants pussy in cars
Johnny's in America
Johnny's in America

I'm afraid of Americans
God is an American
God is an American

Yeah, I'm afraid of Americans
I'm afraid of the words
I'm afraid I can't help it
I'm afraid I can't
I'm afraid of Americans

Johnny's an American
Johnny's an American
Johnny's an American

God is an American
God is an American
God is an American
God is an American

More on the mising explosives

This site shows videos regarding the explosives... great summary of why the Bush adminstration is to be blamed for this mess.

Giuliani Makes an ass out of himself

To view the video put Giuliani in the search engine... Within the first couple of minutes he blames the troops and states that the administration is ignorant about the missing explosives... Considering they've been missing for over a year that's pretty sad.

George Bush making an ass of himself

One fingered victory salute... thats what he thinks of those who voted for him???

(The video, I beleive comes from right before or right after he became govoner of Texas)

Alberta Votes

So the premier of my province announced the election will be on November 22... We all know he will win, but why so soon? It hasn't even been four years since the last election? I speculate it is because of the Tory plan to expand the role of private health care in the province, but they're afraid of how we'd react... They're not going to announce the changes until AFTER the election! Bastards.

Speaking of being a bastard Klein decided to make fun of people on AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped), who have to live on an abysmal 850 dollars per month. He talked about two women 'yipping' about AISH, who he says was on AISH, stating "They didn't look severely handicapped to me. I'll tell you that for sure. Both had cigarettes dangling from their mouths, and cowboy hats."

What an ASSHOLE!!!! So he knew for sure these women were on AISH and aren't disabled... Now thousands of people on AISH have to worry they are going to get cut off AISH just because they don't 'look' disabled. The fact is MS, Lupus and many other diseases can create problems that don't show outwardly, that can keep people from working. Ralph Klein is a bully and an asshole and I'm sick and tired of him discussing how great and rich Alberta is, but is not willing to take care of its people. He's a Fucking Bastard.

Scary Halloween Costumes!!

Amusing and disturbing all in one ;)

See Eminem's Mosh

From GNN:

Eminem's Mosh Music Video - Directed by GNN's Ian Inaba
Directors Note: Most Americans are well aware that in 2000, the presidential election was decided by 537 votes. From hanging chads to the hourly updates of the manual recount, this story was obsessively covered by the mainstream press. However, what wasn’t covered was what journalist Greg Palast discovered that thousands of primarily minority voters were scrubbed from the voter registry in Florida and prevented from potentially changing the course of America’s turbulent last four years. By the spring of 2004 all around the country, groups from both sides of the aisle were organizing and activating plans to impact the coming presidential election from MoveOn to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. Here at GNN we were finishing our book, True Lies, two related documentary projects and barely had enough time for our own attempt of an online voter registration campaign. Through Palast’s reporting and our own investigations into electronic voting machines and the crossover campaign that defeated Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, we became increasingly aware of the fallibility of elections and the fragile state of America’s most fundamental democratic process. We also knew the potential power of the youth vote. With more than 55 million voters between the ages of 18 and 35, this demographic group accounts for 36% of the total eligible voters in the U.S. And as witnessed in 2000 it all comes down to who shows up to vote on election day.So on the eve of one of the most spirited elections in recent times, it’s time to try and turn out the vote. As a music video director, ideas for videos usually come independent of the song and are then adapted to fit the timing and lyrics of the featured track. I initially developed a concept for this video in June 2004 and contacted Interscope shortly after to find out what artists in their roster would be releasing albums near the election. The goal was to make a video that inspired young people to vote because they too often disregard it as a powerless exercise. To show them that political decisions do impact their daily lives and that voting is the most powerful act we all have to voice our opinion and effect change. And to educate and reiterate the point that whether or not people want to accept it, there are forces in play that attempt to suppress the youth and minority vote. When I got the callback that our favorite conspirator of controversy, Eminem would be releasing an album in November, I knew we had the potential to say something that would be heard by the masses. And after hearing the song later that month it seemed Mr. Mathers had also been in the lab concocting his own plans for the election and it was precisely the anthem I had been looking for. So with less than six weeks to deliver we put together a team and forgot about what it meant to sleep. In order to produce animation for a song that runs 5:20 in just over 5 weeks we were going to need a lot of green tea and mate and a little help from Marshall himself. This video was made possible by a team of artists who came together inspired by a song and video that might be able to effect the next four years of all of our lives. Two years ago, this video would not have been approved by a single record label. A year ago it would never had the possibility of being played on television. But with the changing tide of public sentiment marked by the success of our last video for Chronic Future, an anti-war message that made it into rotation on TRL we think it might just have a chance. Now, it’s up to the broadcasters. Will they ban the top selling musical artist for being anti-establishment while they allow other propaganda to air? Or will they finally allow an artist who has the courage to speak out to take center stage and utilize the airwaves for something other than typical celebrity fodder?Stay tuned here for updates on the unfolding antics and remember to show up and vote for you candidate of choice on November 2nd.

Folk Fest review - Friday

It was a great night! I really have to talk about Michael Franti and Spearhead... they were amazing. It turns out that Franti went to Iraq to perform and see what was going on. He told a story about how when he got to Iraq they officer assumed he was with the Red Cross... Franti said no.. the guy then figured his dreadlocks meant he must have been with the UN... Nope. Finally the officer asked him what he was there for.. "Tourist". Well Iraq presently doesn't have a tourist visa and they had trouble finding the right stamp for Franti's passport.

He talked a little about how he had so many mixed reactions and was nervous playing for a group with machine guns over their shoulders. However he found most of these guys wanted to come home because essentially "the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people can't be won with a machine gun in your hand."

Anyway if you like modern reggae, pop, ska, folk etc. you should check him out... It was an awesome way to end a Friday night.
